Editor in Chief: Georgi Popov
PhD, CSP, QEP, ARM, SMP, CMC, FASSP, FAIHA

Dr. Popov brings over 20 years in academia with him to the Editor in Chief role, currently serving as professor and Chair of the Occupational Risk and Safety Sciences Department at the University of Central Missouri. Dr. Popov earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the National Scientific Board and an M.S. in Engineering Physics from Defense University in Bulgaria. In 2001, he graduated from the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

Dr. Popov began his career in Cambodia, serving as an environmental, health, and safety officer. His previous positions include air quality and lab director for Kingston Environmental Services, Inc., associate professor at Park University, adjunct professor at Central Missouri State University, HAZMAT specialist at HAZMAT Response Inc., and health and safety assistant at Taylor Cables Inc.

He has been involved with 14 different professional organizations and has received 13 honors and awards, most recently being named an ASSP Fellow and receiving the AIHA President’s Distinguished Service to AIHA Award. He has also been named a Fellow of AIHA and received the OEHS Career Professional Award, ASSP Outstanding Safety Educator, and the Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) award in 2017.

Managing Editor: Angela Giotto
PhD, MPH, CSP

Angela Giotto currently serves as the Director of Research and Product Development at the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). In that role, Dr. Giotto provides direction in the design, development, and deployment of BCSP’s learning programs and products. She also serves as the Managing Editor of the BCSP’s peer-reviewed journal, SHIFT: Global EHS Research to Practice.

Dr. Giotto’s career began in general industry with multiple environmental, health, and safety (EHS) roles in the food and beverage sector. She also has experience in railroad pooling and academia. As an adjunct professor, Dr. Giotto has taught EHS courses for Columbia Southern University and Keene State College.

Dr. Giotto holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental, Health, and Safety Management from Ferris State University, a Master of Public Health in Environmental Sciences specializing in Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Substances from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Occupational Health and Safety from Capitol Technology University. She is also a Certified Safety Professional.

Advisor: Bruce Lyon
P.E., CSP, SMP, ARM, CHMM

Bruce Lyon is the vice president and director of risk management services with Hays Companies, Inc. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Safety and Occupational Safety Management/Fire Science from the University of Central Missouri (UCM).

Mr. Lyon has over 40 years of experience managing and directing risk services for a wide range of national and global organizations. He is the advisory board chair to UCM’s Safety Sciences Program, chair of US TAG 262 for ISO 31000, and vice-chair of the ANSI Z590.3 Prevention Through Design standard committee. He is the lead author of “Assessing and Managing Risk: An ERM Perspective”, lead author of “Risk Management Tools for Safety Professionals,” and co-author of “Risk Assessment: A Practical Guide to Assessing Operational Risk.”

Mr. Lyon received the CSP Award of Excellence from BCSP in 2018.

Advisor: Tony Militello
P.E., CSP, CQE

Tony Militello currently serves as executive-level EHS director for the Boeing Commercial Airplanes 737 Program, Delivery Operations, and Quality. In that role, he is responsible for workplace safety and environmental compliance and performance, including 737 MAX return to delivery, commercial flight lines, and paint and storage operations.

Mr. Militello recently completed a 25-year civil servant career, most recently serving as the director, occupational safety and health, and strategic advisor on the staff of the Secretary of the Navy. He was also the functional community leader for over 1,200 safety and occupational health professionals.

His career began in 1995 with Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), where he worked from 1995 until 2003 as a fire protection engineer in regional offices in Charleston, SC, Washington, D.C., and Naples, Italy.

Mr. Militello holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and a Master of Public Administration from American University. He is a director of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Board of Directors.

Mr. Militello is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).

Editorial Board Member: Hom N. Sharma, PhD, PE, CSP

Dr. Sharma serves as a Portfolio Manager/Deputy Branch Chief in the Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance, and Technology (OPHDST) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he oversees a national portfolio of public health data modernization and surveillance initiatives. He previously served as a Supervisory Engineer at CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), leading multidisciplinary teams focused on occupational safety, worker protection, and personal protective technologies.

At NIOSH, Dr. Sharma directed research on respirator performance, healthcare personal protective equipment, firefighter safety, sensor-based exposure monitoring, and human factors affecting protection and usability. His work supported evidence-based improvements to national PPE standards and helped translate engineering research into practical protection for healthcare workers, emergency responders, and other high-risk occupational groups.

Before joining CDC, Dr. Sharma served as a Physical Scientist/Chemical Engineer at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and as a researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), licensed Professional Engineer (PE), and author of more than 70 scientific publications.

Editorial Board Member: Dr. Greg Wolfley Public Health & Occupational Safety Professional

Dr. Greg Wolfley, a Rexburg, Idaho native, is an experienced public health, occupational safety, and medical leader. His extensive background spans operational, joint, and medical health roles developed through a distinguished career in the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy.

Experience

Dr. Wolfley has spent over two decades managing critical health, safety, and operational initiatives. Beginning his career in the Marine Corps in 1999, he deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom and served as a squad leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2009, he accepted a Navy commission, leading key public health, and safety departments. His major leadership roles include:

· Branch Chief (National Center for Medical Intelligence)

· Department Head of Occupational Health (Navy Branch Clinic Sasebo)

· Safety Officer (USS Emory S. Land)

· Industrial Hygiene Division Officer (NEPMU-2)

Editorial Board Member: Mercy Aula

Dr. Mercy Aula is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Public Health. Her academic journey commenced with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, followed by a master’s degree in environmental health & safety management from Northeastern State University, Oklahoma, and culminated in a doctoral degree in Environmental Health Sciences from East Tennessee State University. Dr. Aula’s research encompasses various facets of public health, spanning from occupational exposure assessment to implementation science and global health studies. Her research is particularly relevant in today's world, where many jobs present risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders. Additionally, Dr. Aula's scholarly pursuits extend to pedagogical investigations, and community-based participatory research. As a dedicated teaching faculty member, Dr. Aula has taught a diverse range of courses in her career. Renowned for her engaging, innovative, and interactive teaching style, she fosters a positive and productive learning environment for her students. Besides her scholarly pursuits, Dr. Aula actively serves at her university and the broader community. She currently serves as faculty core for the Sparkman Center for Global Health at UAB and volunteers on the board of directors for the Black Warrior Riverkeeper.

Editorial Board Member: John Wells

Dr. John W. Wells Jr., Ed.D., M.S., CSP, CMIOSH, is Program Lead for the Occupational Health & Safety Management program at Athens State University and has more than 30 years of leadership experience in environmental health and safety across the manufacturing, petroleum, and chemical industries. His career includes senior EHS roles with Texaco (Star Enterprise), Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Flowserve (Duriron), and ERMCO-ECI, where he led initiatives that significantly improved safety performance, operational excellence, and organizational culture.

Dr. Wells earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Safety & Health Management from Murray State University and his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Union University. He is recognized for conducting the first multi-generational study of moral and ethical decision-making among safety professionals (2012) and for his continuing research into locus of control and organizational cultural maturity. A frequent speaker, author, and practitioner, he has published on safety culture and leadership since 1991 and is committed to advancing evidence-based approaches to sustainable safety performance. Dr. Wells has been a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Professionals since 1994 and a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) since 2015.
